The following remarks were delivered at the Village of Argyle Memorial Day ceremony on May 26, 2026.
Good morning everyone,
On behalf of the Village of Argyle, welcome, and thank you for joining us today as we gather in remembrance.
Today, we honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country — those who answered the call to serve and made the ultimate sacrifice so that future generations could live in freedom.
This year’s ceremony carries special meaning as we recognize the dedication of the renamed Larson-Mason-Monson-Penniston Post 251 of the American Legion. The names carried by this post are not just names on a charter — they were sons, friends, neighbors, and members of this community.
Corporal Herman F. Larson.
Specialist 4 Dennis R. Mason.
Sergeant Phillip D. Monson.
Private First Class Howard E. Penniston Jr.
They came from communities like ours and lived ordinary lives until they were called to do something extraordinary. They never returned home, and today we remember not only their sacrifice, but also the families who carried that loss through the years.
We also recognize the members of the American Legion who continue to serve this community long after their military service has ended. Through their work, their leadership, and their commitment to honoring our veterans and supporting local families, they remind us that service does not end when the uniform comes off. Communities like Argyle are stronger because of their continued dedication and action.
Memorial Day reminds us that freedom is never free. It was earned and protected by those willing to give everything for others.
Thank you to the American Legion, our veterans, volunteers, families, and all who are here today to ensure these heroes are never forgotten.
As we begin this Memorial Day ceremony, may we reflect with gratitude, remember with humility, and honor with respect.
